On discipline — reporting live from the battlefield

Given my post from 2 days ago, I couldn’t help but spot this quote which appears (quite randomly) at the top of a set of instructions from a teacher to his students on how to go about structuring their final year essay.

Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success for the weak, and esteem to all

Letter of Instructions to the Captains of the Virginia Regiments (29 July 1759)

…Yeah…never really been good at the discipline…probably why I became an alcoholic…I always thought I shoudl either join the military or become a nun…Military or Monestary…that was going to make me better. No matter that I was not Catholic, I went to saturday night Mass with you enough, right?

OMG, something else I can’t remember. We went to Mass together??? At Sacred Heart?! On Saturday nights? Why didn’t they bring us on Sunday mornings? Do you remember the priest with the perm?
